Hi. Now, I’m working to learn English.(I wanna learn more and more languages. But there are many things to do in modern era.)
I started learning English by ‘English can be mastered for 10000 hours.’(Daiya Hashimoto, no translation)
I met it in 2024 September in the bookstore.
In Japan, there are much of service like “English Conversation school” “preparing school” or books for learning English.
When I was junior high school, I’m tired to think about those businesses.
They have been appealing like, “Age is important! Let your kid learn English earlier!” “English importance will be increased by globalization. So your kids have to~~~…”
But there is nothing to do “necessary” , I think.
However, I got some hopes to spread my actions to the world.
So, I had been looking for methods of learning language effectively.
And then, I met the book. The bookshelf had 1 corner of the bookstore. There were many kind of methods to learn English.
For example) Vocabulary List, speed reading vocabulary/phrase words, Speed making sentences and 1page A4 paper studying….etc
There were so many choices. But I was attracted to it and opened the book.
It explained, “The experience of how the author learned English”
->”Why input is more important than output?” “How long does it take to master(= native’s universty level) English?”
->Some objective methods to learn
Why input is more important than output?
The author says, “Because when we were small, we don’t use English to output at first. There is a plenty of input languages.”
I got strikes. Because i was learned like vocabulary memorize, the system of English sentence and read and listen “deeply” in the schools.
I was excited to new choice of learning English.
Otherwise, Daiya Hashimoto (the author) explained reason in this book.
“School has limited time to learn English for other subjects. So it have to teach about without mega input.”
After reading this book, he recommend reading and listening extensive, so i started installing Audible and bought some books in paper. (Paper reading is more realize than digital!
First book is ‘Holes’.
When i started voiced reading, i had around 3-5 words to misunderstand in a page. There were no high comprehension.(but is there any 100% comprehension in the world??)
But the author said, “it’s adjusting to your level, if you can realize 50%.”
So on, i trusted him and finished to read ‘Holes’ and ‘Who moved my cheese?’, ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ and ‘Psychology of Money’.
When i was reading, i had complex feeling. It’s because of it has no evidence based on ‘science’.
So i tried to find some scientific evidence.
However, I have no idea to search research directly.
So, I attached ‘Pareotic man’ which is Japanese science writer’s blog.
There were some posts about English learning.
Especially, I read about,
“Age of start Learning English ” “How is effective of extensive reading?”
Source of research
“Age of start Learning English ”
Research content is …..
About 674,000 people (Main target is European and 20-40 years old. There were around 10-60 years old people.) were tested and compare with ‘When did people study English since?’
The result is…
-There is no chance to win started learning English on 10 years old person by started learning English since 11 years old.
-Learning English speed will decline rapidly since 17.4 years old.
“How is effective of extensive reading?”
Research content is…..
Around 100 Japanese people were trying to three methods for 1 year.
- Normally learning for school
- Extensive Reading
- Extensive Reading + Dictation
The result is…..
-3>2>1 (sort by effectively)
-There is no big difference between 3 methods.
(these are not explaining about research sources. About Blog’s content.)
Otherwise, ‘Pareotic man’’s author = Yu Suzuki says, “English Learning has to be needed ‘acceptable feedback’.”
There was no wording, but I had felt importance of feedback to learn everything.
Takeshi Yoro who was medical profesor of Tokyo university. He said brain’s system. “‘Learning’ is processed by input and output (+feedback). There was nothing that was separated between input and output in the past.”
We can think from the video games. they were also based on ‘Level system’. In Pokémon, monsters will level up, if we won the battle. In Super Mario, we can remind progress easily like, “how stage we have cleared. “ The games were created for using much of time to it. So there has many mechanisms of how to increase motivation.
So on, I hoped acceptable feedback. There were some choices to make feedback.
-tested by official institutions
-make conversation with English speakers
-write sentences and checked by myself or some English users
-speak to voice recorder and checked by myself or some English users
….etc
I had started to find some exams and chance to talk with English users or write or speak to device.
When I started to focus on improve English, I had been thinking to applied by academic institutions.
So I knew about what kind of tests are used to apply.
The main tests are IELTS and TOEFL iBT.
Both of tests target on university students or cooperative? Socially people.
They prepare higher level if it is compared to other English exams (Eiken, GTEC, TOEIC,,,,etc) EIken and GTEC is famous test in Japan.

CEFR is English level for European made from Cambridge University.
Eiken is Kanji one.
I tried to go with IELTS and TOEFL iBT to apply level for universities.(minimum goal~)
But, I felt that I had to know “What is my now level.”, if I want to obvious how i get there.
But I don’t know my exact level (Is there “exact level” ? There will be changed by condition.)
I had test the past from 3 years.
I took Eiken and it was about 1590 points.
So I guess I am in more than A2 (B1) level.
But there is another problem.
“How to approach there?”
I got my location, knew what the mountain is , but I didn’t know the way.
Next chapter, I will discuss about theory of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and result of IELTS.
TO BE CONTINUED………
